Afeni Shakur, Mother of Tupac Shakur, Dead at 69

Dina LaPolt, the attorney who handled Tupac Shakur's, paid tribute to Ms Shakur as "one of the smartest people I've ever worked with".

Afeni Shakur Davis, mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur, has passed away at age 69.

The Marin County Sheriff's Department in California broke the news of Shakur Davis' death, which might have been the result of cardiac arrest.

Afeni was only 69-years-old and according to biographer Jasmine Guy, she was born under the name Alice Faye Williams in Lumberton, North Carolina.

Along with other members, she was arrested in 1969 and charged with conspiracy to bomb multiple city landmarks, but was acquitted on all charges in May 1971.

Shakur Davis married a fellow activist, but struggled with drug addiction while raising her family in Baltimore and later, Marin County.

"Tupac had passed, and now I was a business woman, wife, and a mother and we could talk real and I mean really real".

She took that lesson and later used it to help others. She also founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, helping to bring art programs to children around the world.

She was the subject of Tupac Shakur's 1995 hit "Dear Mama," and fans on social media referenced the song in tweets and posts.
