Ronaldo wins fifth world player of the year gong

Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been crowned FIFA's Best Male Player for the second successive year at the association's flagship awards ceremony in London.

"I want to mention Leo and Neymar to be here".

Real Madrid supporters, my teammates, my coach, they support all the year so I have to say thank you to them. This is a great moment for me.

A surprise exclusion from the final list is David De Gea who could not beat Gianluigi Buffon, Keylor Navas and Manuel Neuer to the top three.

It was a reverse for World Cup-bound Egypt, where coach Hector Cuper opted for compatriot Messi and veteran captain, 44-year-old goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, chose Ronaldo.

The Best FIFA Men's Player award and the Ballon d'Or, which is voted for only by the media, are now separate awards.

For the women's awards, Gemma Fay, who retired this year after 200 international caps, and former national team boss Anna Signeul cast Scotland's votes.

Unfortunately, Ronaldo didn't find the net against Eibar either and for a man who has a record of 413 goals in 404 games for Los Blancos (yes, you read correctly), every game without a goal is frustrating.

Antonio Conte won the Premier League in his first season at Chelsea.

The Netherlands' Martens excelled as her national team triumphed at UEFA Women's Euro 2017.

Ronaldo played a typically integral part in Real Madrid becoming the first team to successfully defend the Champions League last season. Conte's dominant season with Chelsea may fall short of Zidane's side retaining the Champions League for the first time in the modern era.

"Thank you, a lot, to the guys who voted for me".

British Premiere League club Arsenal's Olivier Giroud won the Puskas award for the best goal, while Scottish club Celtic won the fan award for honoring the club's 'Lisbon Lions' with a display on the 50th anniversary of their 1967 European Cup win. The France striker received the award named in honour of Hungary great Ferenc Puskas for a spectacular 'scorpion-kick' against Crystal Palace in January.

"I would like to dedicate this trophy to my dad", Giroud said.
