Joey Logan races to win at MIS Sunday

Logano became the 10th different victor of the season.

NASCAR Sprint Cup teams made their first trip to the Michigan International Speedway with a new aero package. "They just keep working in this direction and we're going to keep having better and better races". "They put together a great race auto for me. I have guys up there younger than me racing for a win". It's a recipe for disaster, for sure, but I think the race was pretty good. "They fought all day and had great pit stops on pit road".

The seventh-place result for Stewart was his second-best this season. We had a good vehicle in practice and we just didn't really do exactly what we needed to do. That was 54 laps short of what was needed to make it an official race after the Firestone 600 had initially been postponed Saturday night.

With a scheduled distance of 200 laps, Sunday's race at the speedy, 2.0-mile oval falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum regarding points available in the laps led and fastest laps run categories.

"We've been knocking on the door for a win all season", Logano said in his post-race interview on Fox Sports 1. It is also the home state of Roger Penske, owner of Logano's ride. "He has to get to his vehicle for practice!" "What a insane race with the low downforce, more cautions and more chances to screw up".

The finish was Elliott's best of his career and sixth top five of the season. He headed to the garages and never came back out.

Logano chose the outside lane, and eventual third-place finisher Kyle Larson tried to push Elliott past Logano into the lead, but to no avail.

"I had another fantastic auto", Elliott said.

Actually Elliott finishing second shows he didn't do much dumb stuff. Completely my fault. The guys gave me a great auto today. It's something the Sanctioning Body only plans to use one more time this season, in a few weeks at Kentucky Speedway.

"You can't do dumb stuff and win these races", Elliott said.

Hamilton's Mercedes started on the pole position but Sebastian Vettel jumped in front at the start and led for the first half of the race.

Logano will start first on Sunday for the second time this year and the 16th time in his career. After missing the first eight races of the season after suffering injuries in an off-road accident, he has a long and hard road to becoming Chase eligible.

It was his first victory of 2016, his 15th in Cup races and likely assured him of a spot in the NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs.

Drivers losing control of cars were the prime cause of the nine cautions, including a debris caution that created a restart with 47 laps remaining.

Logano kept the lead and appeared headed to an easy win until Denny Hamlin blew a tire with 12 laps to go and bring out a final yellow. Sixteen drivers will make the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup in September.

Race time is 1pm eastern with coverage of pre-race activities beginning at noon.

"I couldn't tell any difference - it's very minimal the difference", said Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose day ended early because of a crash. "I guess we have to think about it a little".

"There were a lot of natural cautions out there and a lot of things that happened, and I think that's a good sign".
